چکیده

It is well known that TCP does not perform well in networks with large propagation delay and high link loss probability, which are typical in hybrid space-terrestrial networks. Implementing Automatic-Repeat-Request (ARQ) retransmission over satellite links in hybrid networks has been proposed to enhance TCP performance by hiding the link losses from TCP. This paper analyzes the impact of implementing ARQ over satellite links on TCP performance. In particular, this paper focuses on the window flow control mechanism of TCP, and provides an exact model for a hybrid space-terrestrial system with transport layer Additive-Increase-Multiplicative-Decrease (AIMD) protocols and satellite link layer ARQ. Both Go-Back-N (GBN) and Selective-Repeat (SRP) are considered, and the delay of acknowledgements (ACKs) of ARQ are taken into account. The numerical solutions for the throughput as a function of different protocol and packet loss parameters are presented. Both the analysis and numerical results show that in most cases, implementing ARQ over satellite links can significantly improve TCP performance, and that proper choices of the protocol parameters can significantly improve the system performance as well. Although the paper focuses on hybrid space-terrestrial networks, the analysis and results are also applicable to other networks with large bandwidth-delay product and one error-prone bottleneck link. 2004 Elsevier B.V. Two Problems of TCP AIMD Congestion Control

AIMD (additive increase and multiplicative decrease) algorithm has been used in many congestion control protocols, including TCP in the Internet. In this paper, we compare AIMD and MAIMD (multiplicative additive increase and multiplicative decrease). Our evaluation shows that the convergence speeds to fair states of AIMD and MAIMD are close to each other. However, MAIMD has some advantages. For...

Enhancing Video Streaming Delivery over Wired/Wireless Networks

Delivering streaming video over wired/wireless networks is challenging, since link errors commonly compromise throughput performance, smoothness, and eventually impair the perceptual video quality. We combine an efficient Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) transport protocol with an end-to-end mechanism that effectively decouples wireless from congestion loss to abolish the damage...

Why Rely on Blind AIMDs?

We are motivated by the fact that fixed Increase rates and Decrease ratios for AIMD cannot adjust TCP’s performance to the Internet’s diverse networking conditions. Indeed, we find that fixed values for the increase/decrease factors of AIMD restrain flexibility, which is a fundamental property of transport protocols in order to guarantee utilisation and fairness in Modern and Future Internetwor...

Performance Analysis of AIMD-Controlled Multimedia Flows in Wireless/IP Networks

In this paper, we develop a novel analytical framework for quantifying the performance of Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) flows in hybrid wireless/IP networks. By using token emulation, we obtain the queuing delay distribution, the probability of delay jitter exceeding a threshold, and the packet loss rate of AIMD-controlled multimedia flows, which is a function of the wire...

Exploiting the efficiency and fairness potential of AIMD-based congestion avoidance and control

Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) is the dominant algorithm for congestion avoidance and control in the Internet. The major goal of AIMD is to achieve fairness and efficiency in allocating resources. In the context of packet networks, AIMD attains its goal partially. We exploit here a property of AIMD-based data sources to share common knowledge, yet in a distributed manner; we u...
